Perspectives on communications management in a socially-connected world

The price of insecurity

The price of insecurity

I work with a number of small businesses, providing communications coaching and technical support.  A difficulty for small businesses is prioritizing what's important and what's a good return on investment out of the myriad of claims being made on a limited day and a tight budget.  In a digital, always-on world, paying short shrift to your website should not be one of those priorities.  I recently got a call from a small business I'd built a site for.  After providing them with training on how to use it, including the back end or site administrator area, I recommended that they contract with Integrated Media Strategies for technical and marketing communications support.  I told them that if they didn't use my services, they should either ensure they kept the site up to date or found someone else. They turned me down.  I understand that there may be some disbelief after the site is up at the need for ongoing support.  After all, it's up, right?  It still has that new car smell.

Years of work at risk

Years of work at risk

A communications project with which Integrated Media Strategies was involved for four years is at risk.  The visibility our communications afforded the initiative attracted more than $1.2 billion in new investments and expansions to North Carolina in the advanced manufacturing sector and helped create more than 6,000 new jobs.  You could have read about it on the website, but the website is down, returning a Fatal error.

At the heart of the project was a website that supported the advanced manufacturing training departments of 10 community colleges. The statewide training initiative showcased the specialized equipment, close collaborations with industry, instructor credentials, and technical curricula.  It also provided successful examples of how graduates and students were placed as interns in the workplace at facilities across the state. This information gave industry a risk-free method to find candidates for advanced manufacturing positions - a win-win for both candidates and industry. In the same way as complex multi-axis machine tools need maintenance, so too do websites based on database-driven content management systems.

Joomla Help - how to create a link in text

Joomla Help - how to create a link in text

I originally created this help topic to assist members of the Experimental Aircraft Chapter whose site I created and manage.  Many of the members are older and were insecure about creating content on a website.  To foster engagement, HELP instructions demystifies the processes they use.  After all, if they are capable of following the instructions when building a kit aircraft, they can do so when posting to a website.

This page provides information about how to post a link in text on a Joomla site page using the TinyMCE text editor

Progress on Advanced Manufacturing Alliance site

Progress on Advanced Manufacturing Alliance site

Integrated Media Strategies has been assisting the Advanced Manufacturing Alliance for the past few months with their branding and helping them establish their communications infrastructure.  The alliance's website made a significant leap forward at the end of August, with the addition of most of the content to the site.

The alliance is an ambitious initiative using $18 million in DOL funding to significantly upgrade the quality of training for the advanced manufacturing industry in North Carolina.  It comprises 10 community colleges offering a range of certificate, diploma, and associate degrees aimed at producing graduates who can be hired by companies using advanced manufacturing for their products.  The website acts as an important bridging tool for the 10 community colleges, which are scattered statewide across North Carolina, as well as a powerful marketing tool for the state and a recruiting site to students interested in a career in advanced manufacturing.
